By all means, read EARTH ABIDES, not only for its philosophical salve but also --because it was written in 1949-- its prescience. And why not ALAS, BABYLON too?
I loved both Earth Abides and Alas, Babylon. They are very different books, but they are both pretty amazing. I haven't read either in years but I can't imagine being bored by either one.
