I thought of this too and think that maybe with the finding of the boat and all the hoohaa that followed, it probably seemed unimportant. I don't know about Mrs Danvers. When Maxim suggested they could have got rid of her earlier in the book, the narrator girl could have taken the opportunity... but then that would spoil the rest of the book... I don;t know.
The boat swept into the bay right at that time - her emergencies were not emergencies at all.
Yes, this frustrated me so much! If it had been me, I'd have been so embarrassed, not to mention furious with Mrs Danvers, that I would have told everybody immediately whose idea it was!
If she did, she'd be too much of Jane Eyre =)
She was young and naive, completely out of her element. She was intimidated by Mrs. Danvers, and insecure because she doubted Maxim's love for her.
