I don't know if its true, but why not. I was confused all through the book, too.
I wouldn't say it was stupid, more like brilliant.
He didn't have multiple personalities. He created the girlfriend as a thought experiment to decide whether he should kill himself or not. The whole book explores his psyche. Just like a lot of mentally ill authors put a lot of themselves into their own stories, you can see Jake's life and inner thoughts very tightly woven in the story he wrote, and he got lost in it a little too much because of how lonely he was, then he decided that the only thing he could do was kill himself.
