On first reading, I thought Eileen did tie Rebecca in her basement. No one else in my book club caught that. It's still unclear to me. I believe Mrs. Polk was alive when Eileen walked away from the car.
But on p. 255, she says, "I could have sat and waited for hours for Rebecca to show up. But there was no point. I knew she was not coming. I knew she was long gone."
I think Mrs. Polk was alive, but it was pretty clear she was left to die either from the cold, or from the poor ventilation in the car.
Eileen does not see Rebecca again--she says so. Mrs. Polk is left alive in the car with the engine running. Presumably Eileen leaves her there to die--Mrs. Polk has seen Eileen's face and knows her name.
Yes, she does say that Rebecca was not coming and was long gone. But why would she suddenly wonder what her father would do if he were to come across Rebecca tied up in the cellar? I wonder if the part about Rebecca being "long gone" was a fantasy or a lie, and the part about Rebecca tied up in the cellar was a bit of the truth breaking through.
I'm totally confused about what happened to Rebecca also! Maybe we'll find that out in another book.
I don't think Rebecca did care that much about Lee Polk. I mean, I do think she was outraged by what had happened to to him and therefore felt he was justified in killing his father, and I considered whether she herself had been the victim of sexual assault. But based on what we actually know - that she specifically targeted Eileen to enlist as her accomplice after coming upon her snooping in Lee's file, I think Rebecca was more motivated by her own idea of justice.
