That's exactly what happened - didn't go into the ocean for nearly two years - and I lived a block away!
Same. I read it at 13 and the worst that happened was a lack of swimming in water that wasn't a pool for that summer. The movie was what scared me - Not the book.
Kids know about adult peccadilloes at that age and generally aren't as sussed about it as adults think they are. My reading was never censored and I developed a healthy sense of skepticism and a strong ability to divide fact from fiction.
