I am rereading the book and no longer, partially as a result of having conversations about it, entertain that naive notion that Coates needs to offer hope. Eula Biss has a grewat argument about white debt that takes up where Coates left off. Her way forward is for white people to remember that systems of power are not ours to command, but whites are also crushed by systems of oppression.
