I don't think there's ever been a more perfect adaptation, everything that was cut out, was cut out because it wouldn't have worked on screen, except possibly Fezzik's moustache which the movie will forever be tarnished for not including.
The World According to Garp by John Irving is another example of a wonderful book with an equally great movie version. In this case there are huge differences but I loved both versions.
