Marsha Raasch I'm 72% of the way through it, according to Kindle and yes, I agree with you. A tale of a downward spiral can only be interesting for so long.

Texx Norman Dickens was paid by the word and he had this habit of a sort of cliff hanger at the end of each chapter because they were serialized, but that is not the reason The Goldfinch reminds us of Dickens. Dickens had a lot of novels that start when a child is young but able to think and experience, and follows that child into adulthood while meeting off beat, or off-putting characters along the way, characters we find riveting. The same thing happens in Donna Tartt's books.

Deb Larkins Agree! I am struggling to finish.

Arlene Ogletree I'm right about at the 500 page mark of this book. At about 375 I started asking when does this thing get started and when will it end. I'm going to finish it because it's not so bad of a story but the Las Vegas part could have been way shorter and just find this picture already. BTW Dickens is on my to do list.
