Melissa I felt that it was pretty clear from the school scenes that this was the case. Since it was written in Italian originally it would be less likely that the author would explain but perhaps a note from the translator could have helped.

Elizabeth It was clear to me as well, but I may have been superimposing my knowledge that my Northern Italian parents spoke dialect at home and learned "formal Italian" only when they started school.
