Sean, agreed. But I'll add that, for me, this novel is Chandler's BIG attempt to go BIG like Hammett's brilliant "Dane Curse". So,yes, mid-century crime novels are, in general, independent. Other than maybe Spillane's Hammer novels. And the only real "chain" that holds them together is Velma. Oh, Velma.
