I think you're confused. The movie is based on the book. The book was published in 2007. The movie came out in 2015. That and it says it was based on "The True Meaning of Smekday" in the actual movie credits.
I just watched the movie (having read the book last spring). There are a lot of plot differences. The book is great in that it moves quickly, never lulls, and is funny is so many ways that the movie could not replicate. I know what they say, "the book is always better than the movie," and mostly that's true (and sometimes it's honestly not). The book is made for movie lovers actually, and the movie made for people with limited quality entertainment options. (And animated features are actually a guilty pleasure of mine, so I don't say that lightly.) "Home" is medium-okay. It's like they're talking down to you, you know? It's hard to see WHY the characters do what they do in the movie because their characters are not developed as well as in the book. (Tip is so much more resourceful, heroic, sarcastic, clever in the book.) Great as Rihanna is, the movie ends up being dominated by songs that have nothing to do with anything, making the movie essentially a pop star's stepping stone rather than a successful execution of what could've been a great plot. The movie is so oversimplified, it has almost a Saturday morning cartoon plot quality--something just designed to sell merch rather than give you that satisfying feeling that something REAL gives you. The climactic movie "solution" to defeating the Gorg practically comes out of nowhere and doesn't even compare to the awesomeness of the book version. VERY SLIGHT TEASING HINTS AT SPOILERS:
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::The movie doesn't do a very good job of developing the tension of the Christmas eve disappearances, the extensive search for her mom, or fighting (and defeating) the Gorg. And where are all the cats?!! That part was awesome and that whole storyline was left out of the movie. Not to mention all the kids that live under Disneyland, or the UFO museum.

But what about all the pets? I have been googling and googling to see people's theories and not found anybody talking about this. That's one reason I grabbed that book (aside from loving the movie and being annoyed at myself for not knowing it was based on a book until I saw the credits.) I was hoping all throughout the movie that the problem of people's pets would be addressed, but it never was...
