Doris Lee So are you saying that the man's mistreatment of Leah was simply based on uncertainty, her physical appearance not resembling his in any apparent way or the fact that he resented/despised/hated his wife? All of these reasons are just shallow :P

Grace Wilton was a vain, autocratic, and possibly sociopathic exponent of his class. He was worse to Trenton than he was to Leah, and Trent was his heir--also his replacement. Villains are hard to get right, though, at least in a romance context. They need to be despicable but believable, and that's a fine line to walk.
