You miss the point
I totally agree with Ash Jurczyk. One reason that Betty may have been a "parasite" (rather nasty term for someone FORCED TO STAY THERE) was exactly that-- where else was she supposed to go? SHE WANTED TO GO HOME WITH HER DAUGHTER & hubby said "fine, but Mahtob stays with me." I thought Betty displayed remarkable courage & fortitude. Until you've actually LIVED (not just "visited" as a tourist to 'see the sights') in another country, you don't really get it. Sorry. And yes, I lived in Argentina during the Cordoba Riots of 1968-69 & it was scary for a variety of reasons, chief among them--I was in another country, other than my own--when stepping off a sidewalk as a parade was going by, almost got me hit in the face with the butt of a machine gun. I don't understand it at all when people blame the victim & criticize her, yet ignore her obnoxious, totally unbalanced husband & relatives who clearly considered Betty a nuisance & unfit to raise her own daughter.
How in the world can an American "spoil Iran's image?!?" It is the Iranians who have "spoiled" their own image. Seized our Embassy under Carter. He, as usual, wrung his hands & did absolutely nothing. Ronald Reagan takes office & that very day, President Reagan announces that the plane has just left Iranian airspace & is headed home. Think that was just a coincidence--I certainly hope not! The Iranians had nothing but contempt for wishy-washy Jimmy & were scared s***less of President Reagan. Attacking an Embassy is the same as attacking the country the Embassy represents. For those of you who think Betty was wrong & Mahmoody was right (and, by extension, Iran's treatment toward women), let me challenge you to take a trip to Iran. Do you think Betty made this entire portion of her life up? Do you think she exaggerated? Well, her daughter certainly does not--she, in fact, backs up her Mother's claim. I lived in Argentina & although some of their customs & mores seemed a bit strict to me, we, as females were not forced to wear head-to-toe burkas as we walked the streets of San Juan, Cordoba, Rafaela, Salta or Buenos Aires. Some of you really need to get out of your cocoons & travel a bit...perhaps you'd appreciate our freedoms more by comparison.

I agree with Sandra. Like what, she was a parasite because she belived in freedom??!! Also, YOU CAN"T TRUST THE BAD PEOPLE IN THE BOOK! You cant ask a liar/liars are you telling the truth? Duh, they will lie again and say yes! So your little, "all the Irans say he is telling the truth" don't mean shit.
Well. If you would be kidnapped to a country with a completely different culture, which is at war, where you are beaten up, where pretty much every woman you meet gets beaten up as well by their husbands, where the whole family of this husband who kidnapped you 'let it happen', which is a huge family, your daughter is taken away from you, being sutured without anesthetics, you are being bombed..how can you NOT complain about spilling too much sugar?
You just called this woman who was a victim of severe abuse and just wanted to protect herself and her child a witch???Oh, honey, you are so lost.
