Thanks your answer explains why I didn't really like the book. I kept feeling like there were parts missing and that it lacked depth. Luckily it's a library loan if I every have the chance to get the UK original edition I will consider getting them.
I wish I could read the original! However, the cost of a 1945 first edition is astronomical and way out of my reach. I prefer the characters imagined, deeply thought about, and created by Winston Graham and his wife, Jean, over the editors mind-set of what will 'sell'. A true study in the human character and their lives is far richer than the fluff of cotton-candy personalities who belong on Hallmark.
Generally look at the publisher and compare it to the books you can find on amazon.co.uk usually helps. Also the page count, I was looking at the kindle editions just now and the US one (Published by Sourcebooks) has 400 pages while the UK one has 481 pages (Published by Pan).

How do you know if a book is a British edition or an American one?
