Sandra Jackson - Alawine Thanks your answer explains why I didn't really like the book. I kept feeling like there were parts missing and that it lacked depth. Luckily it's a library loan if I every have the chance to get the UK original edition I will consider getting them.

Briel I wish I could read the original! However, the cost of a 1945 first edition is astronomical and way out of my reach. I prefer the characters imagined, deeply thought about, and created by Winston Graham and his wife, Jean, over the editors mind-set of what will 'sell'. A true study in the human character and their lives is far richer than the fluff of cotton-candy personalities who belong on Hallmark.

How do you know if a book is a British edition or an American one?

Mariam Generally look at the publisher and compare it to the books you can find on amazon.co.uk usually helps. Also the page count, I was looking at the kindle editions just now and the US one (Published by Sourcebooks) has 400 pages while the UK one has 481 pages (Published by Pan).
