I think the reaction to the gossipy woman reminded her of all she disliked about small-town life. It is easy to be lulled into complacency by a good job and a "nice" life...but she was disdainful of that life from the start. So, in my opinion, she followed her head ad her heart and went off to have a life of her own. - Ginn
