No. This is definitely not a science-fiction book. The students' minds are exactly like ours. Ishiguro was interviewed about this book and said he normally tunes out science information, but he chanced on a story about genetic tech and it fit in with sketches he had been working on for years about students at a boarding school. He's not interested in writing about anything but fully human beings.
They were educated, at Hailsham at least. They read books and poetry. Miss Emily mentions that at the end, that they made them educated and cultured - which annoyed me, as they weren't allowed to integrate into the culture of the society they were in.
