Your review is exactly how I felt about this book, too. The only reason I can find that it was awarded the Pulitzer is that, like Middlesex before it, it uses Americans' readiness to believe everything outside their borders is uncivilisation, full of dictators, injustice and primitive magical rituals. It reinforces and rewards their sense of cultural exceptionalism.
