Oh and Jean Johnson's Theirs Not To Reason Why is addictive. It shouldn't be good, very Mary Sue, but it is. And it's also tragic. I knwo that's a spoiler, but I would want to be warned.
Mageworlds by Doyle and MacDonald are available in ebook format. It starts with The Price of the Stars. Highly recommended. Also Elizabeth Moon's Vatta series or Heris Serrano series are both good.
Yes, those two are good. Also Karen Traviss' W'es H'arr starting with City of Pearl. Elizabeth Moon's Vatta's War series - I agree with Sarah on that one. Lovin' Martha Wells Raksura series right now starting with Cloud Roads. And Ann Leckie's new Ancillary Justice series is totally awesome!!
Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan books have some "space opera" in them. And what about the Paradox series by Rachel Bach? The first is Fortune's Pawn and we read it for your Goodreads book club. :)
