He wasn’t a rapist; You’re applying your current modern values to the situation instead of taking it in the way that it was meant in the novel. You’re simplifying it and missing all of the symbolism that it contains. You’re reading for the literal and missing the beauty of this book. It was meant to be inappropriate, The characters reacted, as if it was, and did what they could to put it off as long as possible. His mother was embarrassed by this. The parents offered any of the other daughters. This element of the novel is in there for a reason
