I'm super glad you brought this to my attention. I went and checked my profile and I have it opened up so I can receive invites and messages from anyone, but there's a bug. You're right to be frustrated and I had no idea this was happening. I've messaged goodreads and asked them to fix this. I want people to be able to private message me or friend me. Thanks for bringing this up.

Thank you Elyse. I'm glad to look into this and I'm grateful you brought it to my attention. I got an answer from Goodreads and realize what we were missing. Honestly, I think that its a flaw in their setup as it took me a little while to figure out after reading the email. It's a very subtle thing to know about. Anyway, below is email from goodreads on this:

Thanks for writing in! I'm sorry for any confusion and frustration! You (or any user) should be able to friend authors. If you navigate to their author page, on the left side, below the profile picture, you will see a "Follow Author" button. If you click on the arrow to the right of that button, you will get a series of options, such as "Add as a friend" or "Send message". Simply click on that.

If the user is already following you, the button will read "Following", but the drop-down menu will be the same. If she clicks on the arrow she'll be able to friend you and/or send you private messages.
