Your comment about Julian and Henry's 'do what is necessary' conversation got me thinking. I looked back through the book and it looks like it happened before the first murder.
I think Julian was telling Henry to do what was necessary for the bacchanal to work, like experimenting with dangerous drugs
The man in the forest wasn’t beaten. That was a lie to make it seem like an “accident” to Richard. I believe Francis lets it slip by mistake that he was actually disemboweled.
