alana Thank you for clearing this up! Like Oliver, I am a native German speaker and also got hung up on "an historian" every single time. Thanks Oliver for asking, thanks Jodi for replying. We non-natives appreciate it a lot.

Eliška Exactly what I was thinking every time an historian popped out! Thanks for asking and thanks for answering. Interesting note: Grammarly is marking an historian as incorrect and suggests replacing it with a historian as I write which might feed the non-native speaker confusion even more.

Norine Luker As a native "American" speaker, I have to say that I feel like an historian sounds more natural depending on how you pronounce it. Got this off of reddit: " Short answer: "a historian". Longer answer: use "an" before a vowel sound and "a" before a consonant sound. If you pronounce the h of historian, use "a"; if you don't, use "an". I just can't think of Max as a Historian. I think of her as an "istorian."
