Given the nature of that scene, I would agree that it would seem she was totally lacking in self-respect. But was there anything ever in the book that she did before that or after that indicated she had a deep problem with self-respect? Just didn’t get that scene at all. Yuck.
Or perhaps not a reliable narrator. Are any of us really reliable narrators when revealing our own lives or past?
Low self-esteem is a sad character flaw. It's not supposed to be "likeable"
