Camie I know there are many people who think that the prose is more important than the content. My question was is there anyone else who agrees with me that this book is distasteful.

Steph I havent' gotten to the end but in regards to content, Oprah has picked books with similar themes before. You have "The Bluest Eye" (where a child gets pregnant by her father), The Book of Ruth (violence, pornography, mental illness), The Lovely Bones (where the neighbor is raped and murdered), and countless other books with these themes. So time and time again, we have these dark, harsh themes. So I guess my question to you is, what is particularly about the book you find distasteful and unsuited for O's book club?

Camie I guess I just need to steer clear of Oprah endorsed books. It's very unpopular not to like them and even more so to loathe them.

Steph I don't think your opinion is bad, or even unpopular to be honest. a lot of ppl aren't big fans of some her choices. I am only commenting upon why you thought it was a bad choice (the subject matter). However, if you feel that way about all of the books with this type of subject matter, then I understand. i just thought you singled out one book. I hope I didn't offend you.

Camie Oh no it's all good. Truthfully I had sort of lost track of Oprah. I wish I had read more about it before I bought it. Many are saying this is a typical Oprah Book I guess I just got lost back there with things like The Secret Life of Bees.

Dee "but she's the LEAST explicit in those moments. Inferring what is going on but not being perverse.” I guess you haven’t read the scene where the girl is strangled while being abused in front of her friend.
