Re-reading my comment, I feel I should clarify: Auri is useful, but Kvothe doesn't realize it. He feels compassion for her, and he wants to take care of her, without expect anything in return. It's much the same with Denna and to a certain degree Fela.
Yes, I did read the book, but you know what? If someone disagrees with you, just patronize them, best strategy!
Patronization is demeaning. You wrote an aggressive comment about a well-developed character written by a well-loved author. You must have known someone would call you on it, without patronizing you. If you didn't want to start a discussion, you shouldn't have started a thread, especially with a cuss word in it.
Enough, digression. what exactly is it about the female characters that you find simply decorative? No, having lung problems doesn't make Denna well-rounded, but it adds depth, as does her refusing his gift of the talent pipes that she helped him win, though her only means of making a living is plying gifts from men and selling them. She doesn't have much else to do, so she earns a living as an escort. It's sad, but it grants her a level of independence she couldn't otherwise afford. Her back story is vague because the narrator himself doesn't know it. The most information he can get about her actually comes from a conversation with Deoch, and one evening spent with a drug-addled Denna. The rest Kvothe has to piece together from clues.
