Jean But Sam sent Sadie to get Dov's gaming engine when he knew that Dov was Sadie's ex and it would probably go badly for her. Not that he'd predict exactly what would happen, but he knew it was difficult and didn't let on. I do think that was a betrayal.

Judith I disagree. They were both fully aware adults, so Sam couldn't "send" Sadie anywhere...it was her choice to make & in that moment she was willing to risk it. You can't judge what happened in hindsight!

Catherine Tyrrell I believe the book addresses that, Marx explains to Sadie that Sam likely did not know because he was the one who put the disk in the computer, not Sam.

Judith Correct. At any rate, I don't consider Sam complicit in Sadie negotiating a business deal with Dov...they needed his engine & she put the company first.

Jean @Catherine, I don't think Sadie believed Marx. Marx was giving her a reason to forgive Sam, but I don't think he believed it himself. I don't recall why I had that impression. Also, I think when Sadie does confront Sam he just kind of shrugs it off.

Judith Again, what was there to forgive? Sadie was a grown woman who made her own decision, nobody tricked her, or drug her over to Dov's, or made her stay. That's why Sam "shrugged it off," he didn't betray her.

Lisa I agree with James. If Sadie is so mad because she believes Sam sent her back to Dov, then why does she continue a relationship with Dov throughout her whole life, but is horrible to Sam.

Judith Which takes us back to the original question about mutual betrayal between them...,I still maintain that Sam never betrayed Sadie, with Dov or anyone else,

message 9: by Lisa (new)

Lisa I agree. I don't think Sam ever did anything to deserve Sadie's ire.

Lila Besides, even if he did have ulterior motives to "send her" to Dov, and was as "evil and calculating" as she made him out to be (though not everything's so black and white) it's not a justifiable enough reason to hold a grudge for YEARS and be as heartless as she was with him. Also because of this, she didn't visit him the next day at the hospital after he had SURGERY in which his foot was fucking AMPUTATED. Now that, as his best friend who promised to be there, was a betrayal. It was downright cruel. She really needed to get her priorities straight, 'cause holy fuck.
