I ask these questions because I have triggers myself. I try to find books for myself that won’t bring up memories. Books are used as an escape and it’s okay for people to figure out what books are good for their mental health and which ones aren’t. I’m asking this for myself and no one else. Reading is such a personal thing and I am choosing my own books as you said by asking this question.
If you avoid any novel that has violence or sexual content in it, you're not going to be reading much (if any) material of quality for the rest of your life. Grow up. (And what an especially dense question to ask about a book that takes place in the Harlem criminal underworld of the 50s and 60s, which is CLEARLY stated in the plot description.)
There are plenty of books that handle violence and sexual content in a sensitive way. Reading is a very personal thing and it is used as an escape. If people have had traumatic experiences in their life, they aren’t going to want to be reminded of those times in their life when they open up a book. We all need to have some patience and understanding for people. I personally can handle a certain amount of violence but I prefer not to read about sex. That doesn’t affect you nor hurt you in any way. There is a genre called closed door romance for people like me. I’m very interested in this time period and I understand it’s a tough time period read about. But I’ve read world war 2 books that deal with horrific topics in a way most people can digest. I think it’s very close minded to just assume that only quality reading comes from violence and sex.
