Aiko’s answer to “Can anyone who has read the book tell me at what point this so-called 'amazing' Bolano story grabs …” > Likes and Comments

I agree with you there - there are too many good books in this world to waste time on ones that don't 'grab' you!!
I'm with Heinrich, it is not meant to grab, if you choose to walk beside Bolano, he will take you by the hand and guide you through, but he does not strike me as some one who is going to insist and drag you through, no grabbing, no articulated author's craft to trick, invite and seduce you. It is a journey of life, in all its insipid dull characters, its lifeless moments and its moments of overwhelming intensity. Aiko, intersting is a perspective, story telling is a cultural phenomena, this story has the hall marks of a non-linear culture. Maybe this is Chilean, I don't know, but Arabic stories, Russian stories, Persian, all have very differen approaches to how they are told. Of course. Did you read Savage Detectives? I want to read another, I now know the commitment I am undertaking, so I want to value my time too.
