When I read a book, I take different things from it and probably those things would be different to the next person reading it. We notice/learn from/are moved by different things and the point of the books in this story was that each book had something for that character at that time. 'Odd things' meant something to them. Just because we would notice other aspects does not mean the author was mistaken in what she chose for her characters. When reading P&P none of the characters 'needed' the humour or the writing so they didn't notice that, or maybe they did but that wasn't relevant to their development then.
