I'd like to think that Klara saved Josie too. But she may have intuitively recognized Josie had passed the crisis in the illness.--She was remarkably observant, even if she did not alway grasp the reality of what she saw.
I believe that Klara did indeed save Josie, that Klara did "inhabit" Josie. The author did not reveal the process of achieving this. My theory: Josie died. The "portrait" Josie was given Klara's programming, therefore basically becoming Klara-acting-as-Josie. Rick left because Josie was actually gone. Klara's original body was left in the storage room for a while and eventually taken to the salvage yard.
