To add to the optimism, it could be that Duchess eventually finds them and tells them of his near-death experience
I thought that too, that this is really Billy’s story…and that because he and Emmett leave, he can’t really know what actually happens to Duchess. He believes Duchess is a hero though, so by imagining the story this way, he gives Duchess a hero’s ending…even if it is a tragic one.
The more I think about this book, the more brilliant I think it is.
Since the Duchess sections were written in 1st person, maybe Billy wouldn't have known the outcome.
