I agree with you.
I just finished the book and am still thinking about the ending. But I’m not sure Emmett didn’t know what would end of happening to Duchess. Emmett and Billy left their share of the money in the trunk of the Cadillac. I’m not sure they would have done that if they knew Duchess would to return to shore and have their share too.
This seems to be a common confusion... maybe because the author talks about the Cadillac and the Studebaker in two sentences. Duchesses things went into the caddy, Emmet and billys (and the trash) went into the studebaker
