Right, that's my point- I don't much care for books whose main character isn't meant to be liked. And I beg to differ, on multiple occasions Joy did try to make excuses for Savannah. Heck she decided to go on a "camping" trip of sorts with her, didn't she?
Joy was slow to believe the worst of Savannah, & early on made "excuses" to rationalize her behavior. Later, she made it clear she understood, but did not condone. Going on the retreat was Joy's chance to walk away for once (like Stan always did), not to bond with Savannah.
