Yes! Absolutely this. As someone who has endured depression for over forty years, it felt like a patronising slap round the face with a wet sock.
This is an actually meaningful talk that goes directly against that kind of narrative and against the chemical imbalance idea (which isn't most depressed people) and deals with depression as a response to real experiences and problems. If there are people in your life who don't "get it" this might help them. Look up the Ted Talk "This could be why you're depressed or anxious | Johann Hari"
I'm sad to hear that about your lives. I haven't read the book so have no issue pro or contra it yet (except I can see the cover rap is translated unidiomatically - Eew) but I hope all of you will feel better in real life, if not helped, then at least unaffected by this book. Love to all of you people.
I don't think people are embracing "such a cutesy" idea of any disease. There are a lot of recent studies regarding thought work. It is not for everyone, but it has helped some. Even helping one is enough. We are all different - depression and suicidal thoughts don't have a one cure fits all remedy.
The author himself struggles with depression and has written about it. I do not feel like this book is 'cutesy' at all. I have struggled with depression and anxiety for many, many years, including two attempts to harm myself and inpatient stays. I loved this book. Not everyones experience is the same..
