Paula J. Yes! It was a "slice of time." And maybe not a lot happened , but the story said a lot! There are lots of ways to think about the issues he Ishiguro raises. His books are unforgettable!

Liz Nichols David, I think Ishiguro is very Japanese in this aspect of his writing. Interesting that you connected to Lost in Translation, which I adored, having lived in Tokyo for 2 years and studied Japanese language and history. I wonder have you tried The Buried Giant, and how's it going? I found it almost impossible to get through, but a year+ later I can't stop thinking about it. And like this novel, on the last pages I welled up crying, but can't say quite why. He is a unique and powerful author.

D. I bet that was interesting, I've always wanted to go to Japan (and meet Scarlett Johansson in a hotel bar preferably). I haven't started the Buried Giant yet but I will get to it eventually. Currently working through some hefty fantasy novels!

Jill I felt the exact same way

Ayabulela Tutuse I agree, I was 3/4 into the book and nothing really had happened. I suppose the author was generous in describing the plot and small details
