I am also childless by choice. However, in the book the point was made that Tate and Kya would have welcomed children. IMAO the childlessness is part of the wrapping up of the story. Children would have made everything more complicated and Kya would not have had the same life in the marsh. I consider this one of the many weaknesses of the story.
