Julie Suzanne I think she magically thought she could swim as a hyperbolic way of demonstrating that she was for the FIRST time empowered. She empowered herself, and she was going to go reclaim her life. The fact that she wasn't actually as powerful as she imagined may indicate that it would not have actually made a difference. Perhaps her parents would have kept her shackled despite her attempts... a lot to think about.

Isabel I had the same question! Why did she think she would be able to swim? It is magical thinking. I think she felt empowered the way her mother had not.
I had not thought about the fact that the final thing she did not share was the fact that she forgave them.
I could not decide whether I liked the book or now. It was too depressing. But now a couple days away, I see its strength

Erica Julie, I had that feeling too. She was unaware that she couldn't actually do it. Very sad indeed. Tragic. The entire book is tragic. Provably why I loved it so much, as Ng communicated this tragic situation so well.
