you missed the whole point of the book which is that women's concerns are often dismissed bc they are grieving, or hysterical, or vengeful, or whatever a million other excuses society will come up with. no amount of shouting was going to get anyone to believe her when her ex-husband, his new wife, and her own daughter are gaslighting her and everyone else into believing that she making it all up. your indignation and virtue signalling is exactly the kind of unhelpful reaction that once again places the blame directly on the mother when she is already being gaslit and made to feel as though her concerns are not valid.
You need to read it again, all the time she could not be 100% sure because she did not believe in herself due to her mother and grandmother's past ... she had her own issues but was not as evil as Violet ... that is why she went back to the cafe to ask for someone else's account of the "accident" but at the end when she hears Gemma's message she finally knows that she was not "imagining it" and I'm sure if there was another chapter she would be confident to call child services after that.
