Relax, I'm not shaming anyone
Clean is not a negative term. It's a preference and it's actually a genre. A lot of people like clean - no sex, no language - in their reading.
I don't think Kate's comment was judgemental at all! The term "clean" ALWAYS made me want to crawl out of my skin —I don't know if it's because English is my second language and we learn in school that the opposite of clean is dirty...
But saying something is 'clean' automatically gives you the idea that sex is bad and dirty. And reinforces the subconscious idea that steamy romances and erotica are less-of because they have sex scenes.
Even if everyone in this comment section isn't part of the stigma, there is a stigma against smut.
I don't mean people have to read things they don't like or things they aren't comfortable with. But as a reader myself I think the terms 'open-door' and 'closed-doors' are waaay more respectful. Those terms give readers a notion of what they are going to be reading without "shaming" anyone.
I agree with Thais and Kate - the opposite of 'clean' is assumed to be 'dirty,' and it implies that those who write and read sexually explicit material are 'dirty,' which can be further extrapolated to be 'bad.' Everyone has their own tastes, and if people don't want to write about or read about sex, that's fine. I just think we should have terms that sound like less of a judgment. Open versus Closed Door seems to cover that.
What a BS comment meant to shame the asker for not agreeing with your world views. You should be ashamed of yourself and stop judging others.
Oh, my God, let people use their own terms and relax!!! It's not killing someone, it's just a term referring to a genre!
