From memory, John was recognised in an old photo alongside the fox. I agree this thread, introduced late in the book, was a bit confusing
There is an early mention of John and Ron nursing the fox (I think Joyce doubt Ron did much actually nursing - does that ring a bell now).
The picture of John nursing the fox appeared in the community newsletter which was how he was recognised as someone who'd been there 50 years ago.
Early in the book, Bogdan is thinking "Ian bought a family of ducks, but foxes killed the ducks, and then a guy Bogdan knew from the pub had killed the foxes. Ian didn't buy any more ducks after that, because what was the point? There will always be foxes." so maybe the foxes are an allusion to crime? or a certain type of person?
