Brigid Thank you for sharing this. I try to listen to folks from within communities when it comes to these issues, so it's really helpful to hear a little bit of diversity of opinion!

Rebecca I am all for calling out racism. But dreadlocks are not exclusive to African Americans, so I am not sure that anyone can truly say that is racially insensitive. Just look at Wikipedia and there are a variety a cultures depicted. I think your approach of considering the writer's intent makes sense.

urwa @ Rebecca yup! many people in my ethnicity have dreadlocks, and i am not black (i'm south asian), but i think the thing is it's still not a white hairstyle, which is why there is a long history of racism associated with it. So i get WHY people were offended but if you look into the context, it's nothing racist

Rebecca My white and blonde nephew had dreads to his waist for a decade and this hairstyle is common in the hippie community where I am from. So I guess I just don't see it racially. Historically this was not a non-white hair style, Vikings are believed to have worn dreadlocks, and Wikipedia says the earliest depiction of dreads was in Greece. But people are going to find what they are looking for.
