The whole point of the book is that any teenage girl is an easy picking for this predator and monster. I think that is the reason why the author wrote this book. These men get away with it because the girls are too young to understand what is happening to them. Therein lies the terror. I can happen to anyone.
The mother knowing really bothered me. Even if she didn't "know" she clearly had a gut instinct about it that probably was confirmed when she saw the picture of them.
