No, he didn't. . Turner was reading the history of the diner/hotel underneath the name of the diner. The diner was in the hotel which was formally The Richmond Hotel, where Elwood spent this childhood reading adventure stories while his grandma worked.
No. This is actually a brilliant, Louis Borges-type reference. Jack has fictionalized, nearly trivialized, Elwood's tales of his childhood. It is a commentary of how our culture, even those fighting against oppression, have mythologized MLK, Rosa Parks and other civil rights martyrs. BRILLIANT!
