Amanda I am a computer science PhD student and honestly I would say that we are due for a new open source OS. Right now there are two kinds of OSes in use: unix (Linux and all of apple’s OSes) and Windows. Neither was designed for today’s world and it really shows. Open source OSes have the dubious advantage of never having reached wide use which means that it’s easier to transition them to a new base, which means that it is very likely that radical redesign of an OS architecture would happen in the open source community.

That being said I too feel like the open source community has changed a lot and is much more corporate and less decentralised hacker these days than, say, in the early 00s.

For whatever it’s worth I think releasing new hardware platforms that aren’t phones, like the caddies, would make a lot of sense and would be just the kind of thing a freewheeling tech startup might do.
