Dorothy So sad. Reacher deserves better. Love Reacher, can't watch Cruise.

message 2: by Robert (new)

Robert I enjoy Clint Eastwood as well. One of my all time favorite actors. In his younger years he would have been a shoe in. However Jack Reacher is not 81 years old, Clint's current age. As far as Tom Cruise I will say that whoever thought of that must have been smoking some serious crack!

message 3: by Bluedaizy (new)

Bluedaizy NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooo.ick.

message 4: by Jan (new)

Jan I had also read this astonishing piece of news and was appalled...not that I don't like Tom Cruise but he's no Jack Reacher -- not even close. Like Linda, Liam Neeson came to mind as did Aaron Eckhart.

message 5: by David (new)

David Viggo Mortensen played that slow burning, retributive hero in "A History of Violence" and he would be good. Aussie Eric Bana is closer to the right size.
Jim Caveziel is playing a similar character on TV in "Person of Interest".

But Tom Cruise. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
This speaks more about making money than making movies. But I guess money trumps art every time.

message 6: by jaadhimalli (new)

jaadhimalli Though Tom Cruise is my favorite hero, I cant think of anyone doing Jack Reacher except Clint Eastwood.

message 7: by Clyde (last edited Aug 09, 2012 10:10PM) (new)

Clyde Oh not Tom Cruise -- Hugh Jackman for Reacher, Please!

On further thought, Sean Bean would be great as Reacher. Cruise doesn't seem to fit.
However, maybe they can make it work. After seeing 5'10" Matt Damon successfully play 6'3" Francois Pienaar in Invictus, I learned to respect what a pro can do with camera angles.

message 8: by Bo (new)

Bo White Tom Cruise would be great if Reacher's physical description wasn't articulated so well. Hopefully, Cruise can pull it off.

message 9: by AndreaH (new)

AndreaH AAAARRRGHHHHHH! I hope Child can refuse

message 10: by Jean (new)

Jean I picture Reacher as a Viggo Mortensen kind of guy. Tom Cruise would just destroy the whole Reacher image imo.

message 11: by Abigail (new)

Abigail I'm going to DIE! That absolutely CANNOT be possible!!!!! AHHHHH!!!!!!

message 12: by Bill (new)

Bill Giovannetti Reacher is a big tough guy with battle scars. Tom Cruise is a pretty boy. Ugh. It's the power of money. I'm bummed too, and it sounds like I'm in good company.

message 13: by Joyce (new)

Joyce I will not see the movie with Cruise as Reacher. That would totally distort my image of Reacher. I won't see Cruise in any movie anymore. But as Reacher is totally ludicrous!

message 14: by Fred (new)

Fred Waited in traffic when they blocked off the blvd in front of motor inn, not once, but twice. Police cars screaming out on to road for several takes. Had no desire to stick around and see Tom Cruise. Just can't see him in that role. Ok in other roles, not this one.

message 15: by Kirstina (new)

Kirstina Popey Tom Cruise is not Jack Reacher. But that's not the only way the movie betrayed the book. It left out characters completely that were critical to the book and its flow.

message 16: by Mike (new)

Mike Sampson Horrible choice. I think The Rock would have been great for the role.

message 17: by David (new)

David Well, it's out now and I have no plans to see the film with Cruise in it. The person I've been casting lately in my mind as I read the books is Thomas Haden Church;
big badass and looks properly worn out.

message 18: by Ted (new)

Ted Kendall Like many here, I was surprised to hear the idea of Tom Cruise playing Jack Reacher. Just the size alone. Plus the style of most Cruise characters is not at all in line with the Jack Reacher character. Maybe Lee Child is right, and the unstoppable force thing will work, but I just don't see it myself. There are so many other actors who could do this and look the part too. Aaron Eckhart was mentioned; I think he would be much better than Cruise.

message 19: by Arran (new)

Arran having watched the trailer, i have to say cruise just doesn't seem to cut it. Hopefully I'm wrong and the movie will be epic, i love the novel and have read all the reacher books. Unfortunately the trailer just doesn't seem right somehow. Cruise looks ridiculous but i'll give him the benefit of the doubt and hope its a well written movie that follows the books plot.

message 20: by David (new)

David Tom Cruise is a horrible choice for Reacher. It's just a poor fit. There are many other good choices. When I first heard about the movie, I was excited. Then angry, when I heard about Cruise.

message 21: by Eydie (new)

Eydie Anyone but Tom Cruise!!! I agree with Flint Eastwood; I have read all the Teacher books but will not go see Tom Cruise!

message 22: by Harvey (new)

Harvey Burgess Jeremy Renner would actually be a near-perfect fit for this role.

message 23: by Janet (new)

Janet Carson Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher? Seriously?

message 24: by Debbie (last edited Aug 30, 2012 08:33AM) (new)

Debbie Will also be boycotting the movie, casting Cruise as Reacher is totally ridiculous and whoever did it should be shot!

Who would be your Reacher

Definitely Ray Stevenson for me

message 25: by David (new)

David Stop whining people. Tom Cruise IS Reacher for all intense and purposes. I love Lee Child's Reacher and have read all his books. I know the book says he's 6'5" etc. I will see the movie because I love to watch movies. They are intertainment, that is all. The movie is made and will be out in December so watch it or not.

message 26: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Funny thing. When I was well into the series, I had a daydream moment about who would play Reacher if there every was a movie and even though I couldn't come up with a good match, Cruise came to mind as the smarmiest, worst-ever.... seriously.

It's the most comical, horrific sellout of a great charactor and series. For me, I'm glad I don't have cable/dish and won't have to suffer thru dodging the promotion..... Usually I'm more openminded or even grounded but not here. It actually gets worse......:)

message 27: by Guy (new)

Guy Kawasaki Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher is like Ashton Kutcher playing Steve Jobs...

message 28: by Niky (new)

Niky It's a sin to cast a weirdo like Cruise as Jack Reacher. Seriously. I've been reading these books for a long time and picturing a certain type of guy and to cast Cruise for the role, will totally ruin the books for future readers. A good casting choice would of been at least someone tall and jacked like Vin Diesel or someone- anyone besides a smurf like Cruise! Obviously the film makers have never read a Jack Reacher book.

message 29: by Esmeralda (new)

Esmeralda I can't imagine Tom Cruise playing Jack Reacher. I would have to forget everything I know about Jack Reacher to find the movie believable.

I saw on Facebook that Michael Connolly saw the movie and thought that Tom Cruise was good. People questioned what Connolly would think if they made a movie of one of his books and had Seth Rogen play Harry Bosch.

message 30: by Marybeth (new)

Marybeth Before hearing that Cruise had cast himself as Reacher, I'd buy Lee Child's Reacher series the day they came out. I wasn't remotely interested in buying the most recent book. The casting of Cruise has ruined the series for me.

Seriously, can you see Cruise headbutting anyone and knocking them unconscious?

Other than a Munchkin, that is.

message 31: by Garbageman (new)

Garbageman I'm sorry, I can not visualize Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. While noting the obvious height difference, Tom Cruise does not portray the image of a tough guy hitch hiking across America installing fear in the bad guys.

I'm more inclined to see the Alex Cross movie. I can visualize that actor as Alex Cross.

message 32: by Tyrone (new)

Tyrone Argh...i hope Lee Child can sleep tonight.

From the Guardian...

He's a 6ft 5in, 250lb saturnine killing machine who travels around the US slaying baddies with nothing but the clothes on his back and the wallet in his pocket. Who better to play Jack Reacher, the hero of Lee Child's series of bestsellers, than Tom Cruise: 5ft 7in, pushing 50, prone to emotional outbursts and regular flashes of gnashers.

But Deadline has confirmed that Cruise is in talks to star in One Shot, an adaptation of the ninth novel in the Reacher series (which so far totals 15 books and 40 million copies). The story sees Reacher initially flummoxed by a case in which a lone sniper murders five people before being captured.

Cruise has long been linked to the series. Before his split with Paula Wagner at United Artists, the pair optioned the books, and Child himself has expressed eagerness for Cruise to take the part. "Reacher's size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way," said Child, in answer to fans who felt Cruise might be too diminutive for the role.

The film is scheduled to start shooting in the autumn, before Cruise starts work on Oblivion, an apocalyptic sci-fi film from the director of Tron: Legacy.

One Shot would be directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who has also adapted the novel. McQuarrie and Cruise have previously collaborated on Valkyrie and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Cruise won acclaim for his portrayal of an engaging hitman in 2004's Collateral, directed by Michael Mann.

message 33: by Holly (new)

Holly Bush From western PA originally and Pittsburgh locals/buddies say they have seen Cruise around town while they film Hot Shots. This is so depressing. Tom Cruise ain't no Jack Reacher. I'll keep the fantasy in my head and not watch the movie.

message 34: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom If he can pull it off then he's a better actor than I give him credit for.

message 35: by Chris (new)

Chris McDowell Tell me it isn't true...

message 36: by Linda (last edited Aug 18, 2012 09:55PM) (new)

Linda noooo not Tom Cruise anyone but him. I remember discussing this a few years back with my brother who 1st introduced me to the books and we couldn't decide who would make a good Jack Reacher, though Liam Neeson would be better than Cruise,he's about the right age and height. In reply to Abi I think Clint Eastwood would have been great 30 years ago same for Brian Dennehy either would have been perfect as Reacher. Lee has won an award for best crime writer at the Harrogate crime writing festival (UK) it was reported on BBC news site which also quotes upcoming role for Tom Cruise and how Reacher fans are not happy. And Daniel I agree wholeheartedly not a big fan of Cruise. Why are so many people suggesting Clint Eastwood would be ideal in role of Reacher, yes if he was 40 years younger not now he's too old!!

message 37: by Dale (new)

Dale He is not the right actor for this part. No talent and not physically right for the part.

message 38: by Jane (new)

Jane Tom Cruise is no Jack Reacher!!!

message 39: by Paul (new)

Paul Whoever said Clint Eastwood, yes sir! Clint is the god I pray to. His attitude would be perfect for Reacher. Someone like Tom Hardy may be able to pull it off, or maybe even Daniel Craig. Neither is big enough, but I could see either in the role.

message 40: by Anna (new)

Anna Will Tom be wearing twelve inch shoe lifts or something?

Simply cannot think of an actor more wrong for this part.

It's so wrong

message 41: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Ugh, I would actually boycott this film if Cruise played the lead.

message 42: by Terry (new)

Terry Odell But the movie isn't the book. Hollywood rarely sticks to the original, and probably 3/4 of the people who go see the movie won't have a clue about Reacher's physical attributes. Hollywood goes for the boxoffice take. And Lee Child, I'm sure, is snickering all the way to the bank. Once authors sell the rights, they have little control over the final product. Ask Robert Crais what happened when they made a movie from one of his book, Blood Work.

message 43: by Pat (new)

Pat Cruise as Reacher??? Ridiculous.

message 44: by Redwine (new)

Redwine Who the heck is in charge of casting ??!! Can they not read ??!!....Hello...6' 5"....not 5' 5"....please say it isn't so......

message 45: by Gin (new)

Gin Tadvick Tom Cruise - as stated before - NOT Jack Reacher. This would be one excellent reason to boycott the film. Can't stand him.

message 46: by Dawne (new)

Dawne I'm so upset about this that I can't even see straight. After first hearing about Tom Cruise being cast as our beloved Jack Reacher, I couldn't even finish reading Trip Wire. It completely ruined it for me. I will never be able to read another Jack Reacher book without seeing a Garden Gnome is his place. Tom Cruise IS NOT Jack Reacher!!

message 47: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth I wish I never knew this. It makes it so hard to enjoy my time with Reacher. sigh As for Cruise in the part? I have never seen any of his movies after Risky Business. I found his "acting" just wooden. I will definitely NOT see this or any other Reacher movie with Cruise in it. I can normally separate the mental picture I have when I read a book from what the movie industry does to the story when they adapt it to the screen. Normally. Just like Interview with a Vampire, I would have loved to see what they did with the story to make it fit the 90-120 minute movie time, but not with Cruise in it. Never.

message 48: by Becky (new)

Becky NO WAY...munchin Cruise to play Reacher!!!! That is not a good match. No way would any fan of the series go to the movie. Really a terrible choice.

message 49: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Love Jack Reacher but I will NOT watch the movie if Tom Cruise plays the part. If they were looking for someone who is the exact OPPOSITE of Reacher....well then they did a fine job!

message 50: by Nike (new)

Nike Chillemi Loved the book, but no way do I see Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. What a lousy choice.
