Fifteen years ago, Saskia de Voss's four-year-old son, Leo, vanished from her family's lakefront home in Lake Placid.
There were no ransom demands. No witnesses. No trace. Despite one of the most intense investigations in Adirondack history, the child was never found.
Now head of the North Country Sheriff's Department, Saskia has spent fifteen years carrying the weight of that loss. Then, another four-year-old disappears.
Luna Kendrick, the daughter of a wealthy and widely detested summer resident, is abducted from a local beach. Days later, her father receives a taunting message from the kidnappers—and is found murdered, his body floating in a vat of maple sap.
As tension spreads through the Adirondack community and pressure mounts from every direction, Saskia is forced to tear open the wounds that have haunted her for years. Could Luna's disappearance in some way be connected to Leo's vanishing? Or is there an even darker motive behind the crime?
With time running out, Saskia must navigate a maze of secrets hidden deep within the mountains she calls home.
