I thought that too but I'm not enough of a Dante scholar to really make the argument.
Thank you! I was afraid I was going to have to search Pilgrim's Progress to see of it was the source of that quote. and I can't believe I overlooked the significance of Beatrice!
I also picked up on the Dante references, but it is equally modeled on the Steve McQueen movie The Great Escape. The mash-up is nearly seamless.
Nice! I love seeing how influences work on an author to create something entirely new, yet still very resonant with the past.

Thanks! I realized I should add: I actually sent my take to Bujold and she kindly wrote me back, and allowed me to publish her thoughts about my theory on my blog, here: http://churchyear.blogspot.com/2012/0...

That’s very cool. I’m also intrigued by the guy who made the WWII comment — I wonder if he was picking up on the Great Escape vibes like I was. Since that movie is all about Nazi POWs, it makes sense.
I love this so much! And that Bujold replied to you!!
I've only read two Vorkosigan books so far so I don't have anything to contribute, but I *love* the internet for being a place of hot takes and wholesome author-reader interactions!
