2026-07 - Indie - DUNGEON CRAWLER CARL - Live ⚡ > Likes and Comments
Here we go then, Dungeon Crawler Carl hits the spotlight ⚡.Classified as indie, it's grown a bit since then.
We're hardly the first group to tackle it but if you haven't done so yet here's a cool chance to scrummage down and discuss with us.
With personal copy in hand, let's find out what it's all about!
Downloaded my copy a few days ago and this will be the first time ive ever taken part in a group read/book club.
10% through so far.It starts right away and thats something I love especially when I've gone into it blind. I knew the title and had seen it mentioned and being read by folks on here but i had no idea what it was about. It has managed to get a few chuckles out of me so far and it's already got me hooked to read more. Sorry this is my first time taking part and no sure whatelse to say incase it potentially spoils it for others reading along :)

I'm excited for you at your first ever group read, especially if you love the experience.
Tell us how far you've got and try to avoid spoilers.
Just a note to others potentially reading Dungeon Crawler Carl for the first time, or thinking about it.You're not the first person to read this book, so don't beat yourself up about it!
I'll be reading when I finish my current book (Starship Troopers) and all I've heard is the endless opinions of others!
Does it stop me?
Or go into a reading slump because of it?
No.
Make up your own my mind.
It's even more exciting when you consider the amount of people you might gel with (or battle against).
Agree, Netanella! Glad you are enjoying it, Connor, and just wait, those chuckles will turn into belly laughs with future books. I was one of those people who wasn't sure I would like the series. I enjoy video games, role-playing games, etc but reading about them? I went into it thinking it wouldn't work for me but was willing to give it a try. Boy was I delightfully surprised. It just sucked me right in and, man, the humor in each book! 😂 And as much as I love the audiobook version for this series, I'm really considering buying all the physical books so I can go back and read them sometime. 😊
Enoy your journey!
The premise is science fiction, the plot is fantasy role playing, but it’s the characters that are the real heart of this book series. I just finished the third book and I still think of Princess Donut!
I have been wanting to get into this series for a while - I really hope to get book one read this month!
I will be joining in this month too and just now grabbed the book. I have been seeing all my friends reading it on here so time to step into that world. I will probably start it over the weekend. I am reading a couple of other books at the moment. :)
I love this series so much! I just read book 8 a couple weeks ago and it was so good! 😁 I highly recommend giving the audiobooks a try, Jeff Hays does an amazing job giving each character their own voice.

Yes, he's phenomenal! Love the audiobooks, too.
That's the best thing about group reads, our friends and foes and all their opinions.Sign me up for some Wreck It Ralph.
I keep seeing this everywhere, even random YT food vlog videos haha, already have a copy so might try to squeeze it in for July :)
Its so much fun to read Kasia, im about 25% of the way through and it scratches alot of itches, Comedy, Adventure, Horror, Sci/Fi even video games, i know thats not actually a genre but if you read it you'll see.

Good to see so much enthusiasm with this one.By golly, it better be good 😂.
I'll be ripping a new asshole if it isn't.

It's a good series."
Thank you G! :)
I just hit the 20% mark and I can already tell I am going to love this series. Good humor, so far, and it's nostalgic (for me at least) - reminds me of the days when I was learning to play World of Warcraft. Princess Donut, and her Royal Bodyguard, come on! 😂 ❤️

50% done and 50% to go, this book did its job in the first few chapters. It hooked me, made me laugh, ramped up tension and excitement its just fun read. I was nervous at first as i consider myself a slow reader so i was questioning if i could read this in a month as first ever book club read but its been just shy of a week and im half way done, dont worry ive already giving myself a pat on the back. How are the rest of you folks getting along, especially those of you who have not read it before what do you folks feel so far?
@Graeme Yeah, I can see that. I can only assume the rest of the series will be as entertaining as this. Once again I find myself asking "why didn't I read this sooner?". 😁
Who do you guys cast in your own head as the voice of Donut? for some reason the whole time i was imagining Patrick Stuart or Ian McKellen even though she is female but now im trying to hear either Kate Winslet or Helen Mirren.
Connor wrote: "Who do you guys cast in your own head as the voice of Donut? for some reason the whole time i was imagining Patrick Stuart or Ian McKellen even though she is female but now im trying to hear either..."For me, it's a younger girl, Bel Powley (Clair from the Morning Show), that I hear as Donut.
And I got Patrick Warburton in my head as Carl and I will never get him out. 😁
Bel Powley a good choice for sure but Patrick Warburton is always a win that dudes voice can be used for anything. Ive seen on IMDB that there is a TV adaptation in the works, no idea how far along the process it is but any popular book gets snatched up almost instantly but here's hoping that means its greenlit and soon to go into production :)
Patrick Warburton is great and he's actually on the audio version, but he's the voice of Carl's father.
I've made a start and my first impression is The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Carl has a self-deprecating Arthur Dent thing going on, and then we go into dungeon exploration and video game levels - quite fantastic.Ooh, I want to see what you get after completing level 10!
And the cat?
Does it transition into some sort of Alice in Wonderland talking Cheshire version?
Madly odd!
I feel happy already.
Sorry Richard, ill keep anymore potential spoilers to myself from now on, or until you say its fair game, hope you are enjoying so far :)
Connor wrote: "Sorry Richard, ill keep anymore potential spoilers to myself from now on, or until you say its fair game, hope you are enjoying so far :)"I wasn't aware you posted any spoilers or hadn't connected if you did, but yeah, watch out for them in general.
We could establish a spoiler-heavy mirror thread to this one but I don't think we get enough comments at the moment for that.
How about maybe a certain date in the month when any spoiler talk is fair game but with clear warning for those who want to avoid, kinda like don't read past this point if you want to avoid all spoilers?
@Richard, yes I got that feeling as well. It’s as if Hitchhikers Guide met D&D and I’m so here for it.
I was thinking that the setup was a lot like Hitchhiker's Guide. I'm glad I'm not alone in that.It certainly is non-stop action.
I like all the jabs at television/media exploitation.
This is such a fun read, I couldn't put it down. I finished up last night and (view spoiler) I have some other books to read this month, but right now all I want to do it go onto book #2! 😖 The struggle is real.
I love you all for your views and opinions and for taking part in what appears to be a perfect book for a group read discussion. The influence of Douglas Adams is very real.
I'm not sure about a freed spoiler version yet, Connor, as everyone has their own pace and some people might not be starting this for a while yet!
I’m stalling out on this at the halfway point I’m afraid. Enjoying the often times hilarious banter between Carl, Princess, and other characters. And the non-stop action is fun. I think I’m just the wrong reader for this series. Besides playing Myst way back in the 90s, I’m just not one to sit and play video games. Our PS4 just sits gathering dust in our home so a lot of the references here are simply lost on me. Hoping the second half changes my mind on this book because I really want to love this series! 😩. So glad everyone else is loving it!
☝ I don't have a console anymore either Janette because I now appreciate that every minute grinding in-game RP, experience or $$ is time wasted when I could be working IRL or getting insights into something new (or old) from books.I don't like grinding anymore without tangible rewards but that's just me and my age.
I might end up stalling like you - I don't know yet!
But that's a difference between books and video games - you read them and usually move on.
Kasia wrote: "Marie wrote: "I am about 10% into it - Carl is cool! lol :)"Look who is here <3"
I won't be here for long though unless I just follow the comments. :)
I am afraid to let you all know that I have stalled out on this one. Unfortunately had to give it a dnf. I will say this I am a video gamer - have tons of games but reading about a game in video game format was driving me nuts for some reason - lol - I wanted to actually play the game instead of reading about it. lol I will say this - I loved the character Carl and I loved Princess Donut - the characters for this book were great but how the book is written is what did me in - I like more of a traditional story telling with books. It almost reads like screen plays which I am not fond of either as I have read books that were in a screen play format - that is how this books format was set up which I see that lots of people love it but it drives me batty for some reason.
Like I said I would definitely play this game if it was a real video game but reading about it is a whole different concept.
I will still check out everyone's comments as you all go along. :)
Very sorry to bail out on you all. ❤
