Andrea We forgot to start a thread for May! But then I'm still getting those April Showers so I didn't notice.

Dean Landers So I am already two deep for May (!!).

First, just read this incredible graphic novel: Asterios Polyp. I'm still thinking about it. My review is me trying to process the book, so you might want to read the book first because there are spoilers. Or if you don't care... whatever:

Freaking brilliant. This is what it means for graphic novels to be a unique medium.

Second: anyone else read this one before?

The Face In The Frost

I now know it is not John Bellairs' most well-known book. But what a very unique trip. In all the senses. Also love that it was a short book (hard to feel up to long reads these days which is why Dandelion Dynasty is taking me SO LONG. The Veiled Throne keeps losing its momentum with time and location jumps).

message 4: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Finished reading An Island of Suspects, enjoyed it a lot. Will have to write up a review soon since it was a giveaway I won on GR.

Now to continue with my tradition of reading on Clockwork Twist book a year - Clockwork Twist : Time by Emily Thompson

message 5: by Jeremy (new)

Jeremy Barry Streets of Laredo. Hawk And Fisher 1-6. Finish Demon Gate Cycle 3-5 and keep reading Shadows of the Apt. Plus some mood picks.

message 7: by Isabella (new)

Isabella Re-reading The Lord of the Rings from cover to cover because I haven't read it for years.

Mary Catelli Isabella wrote: "Re-reading The Lord of the Rings from cover to cover because I haven't read it for years."

It was amazing how much more marvelous it was when I did that.

message 9: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie Probably starting The Lions of Al-Rassan later today. I'm going to immersion read it.

Then after that, I have ARCs to knock out:
Eyes of Kings - I have to read the first two though because I missed that this was book 3 when I requested it. Whoops.
The Demon Star - I've heard very intriguing things: It's a mashup of Dune concepts, Red Rising pacing, and Gideon the Ninth weirdness.
The Castle & the Cloister
A Viper Among Kings

message 10: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Finished reading the Clockwork Twist book, I don't know if its technically a cozy fantasy but it feels cozy to me, I love returning to it year after year. Only two more books left though.

I also read the last book in the Cat + Gamer Volume 8 series. This is so adorable, and the tuxedo cat reminds me of my own. It also allowed me discover "kicker" toys which my cat just loves.

I'm now reading Fearless by Lauren Roberts so that I can finish off the trilogy.

message 11: by NekroRider (new)

NekroRider Finally continuing my read of Percepliquis by Michael Sullivan, the last Riyria Revelations book. After reading the first 5 books of the series pretty much straight through, I ended up pausing part way through Percepliquis a while ago. I was in the mood to switch things up with mysteries and sci-fi. But yesterday I was on a 4-ish hour train ride and that long stretch of uninterrupted reading time felt like a good time to start it back up again.

message 12: by Franky (new)

Franky Finally started reading The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson and liking it so far but trying to follow the concepts in the world building and story.

message 13: by Dean (new)

Dean Landers Oh, man. Just finished Tau Zero. First of all, I want to take the same concept and write a novel that actually has good characterization and builds better drama around the people and some of the details in the plot. So much potential. Still, the concept was cool enough I wrote a long freaking review and gave it a solid four stars....

It is incredible how well those books stand up. They really are a high water mark for the genre.

Is that your first Sanderson? (1) it is a great entry point and (2) "follow concepts in the world building" - you ain't seen nothing yet...

Franky Dean wrote: "Franky wrote: "Finally started reading The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson and liking it so far but trying to follow the concepts in the world building and story...."

Yes, Dean, this is my first one from Sanderson. Liking it so far. Very complex.

message 18: by NekroRider (new)

NekroRider I have finished Percepliquis by Michael Sullivan today. The book turned out to be perfect for my two long train rides cross province this week. This was the final book in the Riyria Revelations and found it a lot of fun. I am happy there are more books in the universe and that I have more Royce and Hadrian to look forward to. Fun times.

And now I am back with The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress by Heinlein. I honestly just wish I could ride on trains all day and read lol

Andrea NekroRider wrote: "I honestly just wish I could ride on trains all day and read lol"

I get motion sick when reading in a moving vehicle...except for trains. They are a great place to read, tons more comfortable (seats you can actually fit in!!!) than an airplane, and when you take in all the time spent arriving early at an airport to check in, the fact stations tend to be closer to your destination than an airport and other delays and things, often it can even be faster to get to where you're going.

Admittedly if you want to get across Canada though, the plane is the way to go, unless you want to see nothing but trees or vast expanses of really flat land for hours at a time. Its a 3 day trip too. I haven't tried it but my sister and mother have done the trip :)

Rachel Scaglione World Serpent Arcanist (Frith Chronicles, #5) by Shami Stovall finished and Warlord Arcanist (Frith Chronicles, #6) by Shami Stovall mostly done
also picked up a kindle copy of DCC 8 A Parade of Horribles (Dungeon Crawler Carl, #8) by Matt Dinniman as soon as it came out. i got so excited the day prior because while running errands i heard 2 guys dropping one of the catch phases in passing and found out they were only on book 2. i think my favorite floor design was gate of the feral gods terrarium bubble floor so im happy happy they still get to read that the first time. and i am forcing myself to not finish it in a week by reading the elsewhere express because i found it in large print at my library on Wednesday. i mean the mystical train thing is a good idea it seems cozy do far i just don't like that all the main characters had to be going thru some depressing crap first in order to stumble on the tickets. The Elsewhere Express by Samantha Sotto Yambao

message 21: by Tony (new)

Tony Calder I have finished GOLD DIGGER REMASTERED OMNIBUS TP VOL 01. This collects the initial appearances in a different magazine, the first 4-issue mini series and the first 19 issues of the ongoing monthly title, with the bonus that they were reprinted in colour - the original publications had been b&w.

I had never heard of this series, but I saw Fanatical was offering a deal of 15 graphic novels for around $25 AUD, so I bought it. The main character - Gina Diggers - is a cross between Indiana Jones and Lara Croft and the series is completely over the top with elves, dragons, undead, aliens and more. It's a lot of fun.

message 22: by Georgann (new)

Georgann I read Magical Midlife Rescue Magical Midlife Rescue (Leveling Up #11) by K.F. Breene . Another terrific book in this terrific series!! I laughed out loud, smiled and giggled, and then I got so worried for our characters.

message 23: by Rachel (new)

Rachel I too am trying to drag out DCC 8 by reading other things too. The audio books are SO good

I got them in pdf format through a bargain website, but that promotion has ended. Individual issues are available on the publisher's (Antarctic Press) website, but they don't appear to have the collected editions anymore.

message 26: by Tony (new)

Tony Calder I have started reading the second Gold Digger Remastered Omnibus. It didn't exist, so I created a record for it, but that seems to have been removed. I will try and recreate it.

message 27: by Pierre (new)

Pierre Hofmann I finished Brass Man, and started the next book in the series, Polity Agent.

message 28: by Andrea (new)

Andrea I finally finished Longknifes Defend the Legation which also is the last book written in the Kris Longknife series...unfortunately it leaves her floating in space on the way to do battle in the middle of a longer story arc. A little Google AI magic and it was apparently due to the loss of his wife and his need to take time for himself.

For what its worth...and I kind of hate to give a bad review after hearing about his personal life, but the books had gotten repetitive, overly drawn out and, and there was little to no progress in the storyline for several books now. If I had to read about Kris' kids going swimming one more time... :)

Now to pick another book for my eReader that hopefully won't take me 5 months almost to do day to get through. That slow pace wasn't entirely due to the book, I just prefer my dead tree ones to the electronic kind.

Now I also finished Fearless...lots of angsty YA love triangle stuff, somewhat more meat to it than the previous book. At least it was fast to read, getting through 100 pages a day without breaking a sweat. Though this finishes the trilogy there is one more book focusing on secondary characters before I can claim the series is finished.

My next physical book will be Cast in Eternity by Michelle Sagara. I'm still happy to have one book a year to return to Elantra!

message 30: by Georgann (new)

Georgann For my reread Bingo slot, I read Written in Red Written in Red (The Others, #1) by Anne Bishop . I just read her newest, Turns of Fate Turns of Fate (Isle of Wyrd, #1) by Anne Bishop the end of April and I loved it so much I decided on this for the reread (which I almost never reread anything). Thanks a LOT, y'all, bc now I have to reread almost the whole series again!! Woot!
